โIt looks like itโs about $3.1 billion. Went up a little bit, or a lot,โ the president said.
Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell disputed President Donald Trumpโs cost estimate of renovations at the central bankโs Washington headquarters.
Trump and Powell briefly addressed reporters during a July 24 tour of the construction site, which has been a source of controversy because of the projectโs cost overruns.
When the renovation project was approved in 2017, the budget was $1.9 billion. It has since increased to $2.5 billion because of inflation, asbestos and soil contamination, and extended timelines.
The president stated during the tour that the price tag has increased by an additional $600 million.
โIt looks like itโs about $3.1 billion. Went up a little bit, or a lot,โ Trump said.
Powell, standing next to the president, shook his head and said: โIโm not aware of that, Mr. President. I havenโt heard that from anybody at the Fed.โ
After Trump retrieved a piece of paper from his suit jacket and handed it to Powell, the Fed chair read the document and confirmed that the upwardly revised estimate included the cost of a third building that had been completed five years ago.
โItโs part of the overall work,โ the president responded.
โItโs not new,โ Powell replied.
โSo weโre going to take a look,โ Trump continued. โWeโre going to see whatโs happening, and itโs got a long way [to go].โ
Shortly after visiting the Fed building, Trump posted on Truth Social that it would have been better for the institution if it had never started renovations in the first place.
โBut it is what it is and, hopefully, it will be finished ASAP,โ he said.
โThe cost overruns are substantial but, on the positive side, our country is doing very well and can afford just about anything โ even the cost of this building!โ
Before his visit, the president announced on his social media platform that he would be accompanied by several individuals, including Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) and Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought.
Bill Pulte, head of the Federal Housing Finance Agency and a critic of Powell, also attended the construction site tour. Earlier in the day, he wrote on X, โJerome Powell must resign.โ

Following his brief meeting with Powell, Trump later told the press that there was โno tensionโ between him and the central bank head.
โI think he had more tension with my great senator to the right,โ he said, pointing to Scott. โHeโs a pretty tough cookie.โ
Asked whether he plans to fire Powell before his term expires in May 2026, Trump reaffirmed that he would not.
โI donโt think weโre going to do that,โ Trump said.
Trump and senior administration officials have regularly urged Powell and his colleagues to lower interest rates, projecting that it would reduce the federal governmentโs interest costs.
