US Strikes Trade Deal With European Union

The trade agreement sets a 15 percent tariff for imports from Europe.

After months of negotiation, President Donald Trump said on July 27 that he reached a trade deal with the European Union.

โ€œWe have good news. We have a deal,โ€ Trump said on Sunday during his trip to Scotland.

In a preview of the deal, Trump said the EU will buy $750 billion worth of energy from the United States, and tariffs on EU imports into America, including automobiles, will fall to 15 percent.

The EU will also invest an additional $600 billion beyond its current investments in the United States and will purchase U.S. military equipment.

After the press conference concluded with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Turnberry, Scotland, members of both delegations shook hands and clapped.

Trump said the two sides โ€œwanted to make a deal.โ€

โ€œThis started months ago, this negotiation, so we knew what we were getting into,โ€ Trump said, adding that the agreement was โ€œsatisfactoryโ€ for both the EU and the United States.

โ€œI think itโ€™s going to be great for both,โ€ Trump added.

He said itโ€™s a โ€œgiant deal with lots of countriesโ€ due to the EUโ€™s 27 member states, and acknowledged that itโ€™s โ€œnot easyโ€ reaching a unified agreement among them all.

Trump called the new EU investments โ€œsubstantial.โ€

โ€œAll of the countries will be opened up to trade with the United States at zero tariff,โ€ he added. โ€œAnd theyโ€™re agreeing to purchase a vast amount of military equipment. We donโ€™t know what that number is, but the good news is we make the best military equipment in the world, so [youโ€™ve] sort of got to do that, until somebody tops us, which is not going to happen.โ€

Automobile tariffs will also be capped at 15 percent. However, steel and aluminum tariffs will โ€œstay the way [they are],โ€ as โ€œthatโ€™s a worldwide thing,โ€ Trump said.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said that within two weeks, the United States will give an update on its plans with microchip tariffs, suggesting that it was a key reason for the EU wanting to negotiate with Trump.

โ€œI’ll let you wait for the two weeks until you get to announce your plan,โ€ Lutnick said to Trump. โ€œBut we are going to be bringing chip manufacturing back to the United States.โ€
