Texas Democrats announced they are returning after a two-week walkout blocking Republican efforts to redraw congressional districts in favor of the GOP before the 2026 midterm elections.
Democratic leaders say theyโll return for a second special legislative session beginning Aug. 18 in light of California Democratic leadersโ decision to attempt to redraw their own U.S. House maps to cancel out any Republican gains in Texas.

The redistricting fight between Texas Democrats and Republicans started when the Department of Justice (DOJ) sent Gov. Greg Abbott a letter on July 7 raising concerns that four congressional districts in the Houston and Dallas areas were unconstitutional because of โracial gerrymandering.โ
Current boundaries run afoul of the Voting Rights Act by relying on racial demographics to group minority voters into โcoalition districts,โ where no single racial group forms a majority, according to the DOJ.
