Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has expressed her intention to nominate U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, the White House said.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters on Oct. 28 that Takaichi privately informed Trump of her intention to nominate him for the prize during their meeting in Tokyo, the second stop on his Asia trip.

During the meeting, Takaichi praised Trump for his role in securing peace in Asia and globally, pointing to his involvement in achieving a peace deal between Thailand and Cambodia—signed during his visit to Malaysia on Oct. 26—and in brokering a cease-fire agreement between Israel and Hamas to end the war in Gaza.

“In such a short period of time, the world has become more peaceful,” Takaichi told Trump through an interpreter.

“I highly value President Trump’s unwavering commitment to world peace and stability. I myself have been deeply impressed and inspired by you.”

Takaichi also expressed her desire to protect Japan’s national interests through diplomacy and to deepen her country’s cooperation with the United States in order to achieve a free and open Indo-Pacific.

Trump congratulated Takaichi on becoming Japan’s first female prime minister, calling her election a “big deal.” Takaichi was elected to the post by Japan’s parliament on Oct. 21.

“On behalf of our country, I want to just let you know anytime you have any question, any doubt, anything you want, any favors you need, anything I can do to help Japan, we will be there,” Trump said.

“We are an ally at the strongest level.”

The two leaders signed a framework agreement on Oct. 28 to secure the supply of critical minerals and rare earth metals. Both sides agreed to partner to maximize efficient mining, processing, investment, and project management operations, as outlined in the framework.

They also signed an agreement to move toward “a new golden age” for the U.S.–Japan alliance. According to the White House, the deal will help both nations strengthen economic security and promote economic growth.

The Japanese government has not released any statement confirming Takaichi’s plan to nominate Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize.
