Review

โ€œJustice Thomas describes his intellectual journey, and his struggle to keep body and soul together on meager government pay, in some of the bookโ€™s most absorbing and self-critical chapters.โ€ โ€” William Grimes, The New York Times

โ€œThanks to this book, the public can get to know the man himself.โ€ โ€” Thomas Sowell, National Review

โ€œGripping. . . . Thomas offers an education in practical wisdom and moral courage. Particularly instructive, and moving, is the portrait of his grandfather. . . . A delightful bookโ€”you really canโ€™t put it downโ€”but itโ€™s also a source of moral education for young Americans.โ€ โ€” William Kristol, The Weekly Standard

โ€œA tale of pride, dertermination and independence. . . . A great American story, written by an extraordinary man.โ€ โ€” Rich Lowry, National Review

โ€œCandid. . . . A fascinating glimpse into a tortured, complex, and often perplexing personality.โ€ โ€” The Washington Post Book World

โ€œAn original addition to those great black autobiographies of the past. . . . A lesson on how to live in freedomโ€”a lesson that begins with a description of poverty on a par with Richard Wrightโ€™s portrait of poverty in Black Boy. . . . Thomas is now an archetype that will inspire others. I can think of no greater achievement.โ€ โ€” Shelby Steele, National Review (cover story)

โ€œVery rewarding reading. . . . While there is anger in the bookโ€”justifiable anger, one might argueโ€”there is also tenderness, vulnerability, brutal honesty and overflowing gratitude. . . . There is also unswerving intellectual integrity.โ€ โ€” Mona Charen

โ€œAs his memoir shows, Justice Thomasโ€™s views were forged in the crucible of a truly authentic American story.โ€ โ€” John Yoo, The Wall Street Journal

โ€œThe book of the year for Americans tired of politics as usual.โ€ โ€” The Denver Post

โ€œThomas speaks candidly about the mistakes he made that fueled his determination to overcome all odds to be appointed to the nationโ€™s highest court.โ€ โ€” The Oklahoman

โ€œA tale so profoundly moving, and so profoundly true to this nationโ€™s ideals, that every American father ought to read the first two chaptersโ€”and then read them aloud to his children.โ€ โ€” The Dallas Morning News

โ€œThomas is refreshingly candid about the depths of his suffering, and one comes away with a deep sadness about our broken politics and the ferocious disincentives for anyone to seek high government appointment.โ€ โ€” Newsday

โ€œAbsorbing.โ€ โ€” The Economist

โ€œThe Georgia native writes a telling memoir about his life prior to joining the U.S. Supreme Court. . . . My Grandfatherโ€™s Son lays bare the darkest, most painful moments of his life, with candor almost unheard of in public figures, let alone Supreme Court justices.โ€ โ€” The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

โ€œA fascinating and irresistible read.โ€ โ€” The New York Sun

โ€œA transcendent work. . . . My Grandfatherโ€™s Son is a coming of age in the fullest sense. . . . A meditation of time and perspective and the shifts in outlook both can bring. . . . A memoir of raw honesty.โ€ โ€” The Oregonian

โ€œEngrossing.โ€ โ€” Jack & Suzy Welch, Business Week
