In an email and social media post, Jeff Bezos outlined dramatic changes to The Washington Postโ€™s opinions section and announced that opinions editor David Shipley has resigned.

Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos said Wednesday that the newspaperโ€™s opinions section would now be focused on โ€œpersonal liberties and free marketsโ€ and wonโ€™t publish anything that opposes those ideas. With the shift, opinions editor David Shipley has resigned, and The Post is searching for a successor.

โ€œWe are going to be writing every day in support and defense of two pillars: personal liberties and free markets,โ€ the billionaire Amazon founder wrote in an email to Post staffers that he also published on X. โ€œWeโ€™ll cover other topics too of course, but viewpoints opposing those pillars will be left to be published by others.โ€

In his memo, Bezos wrote that he offered Shipley a chance to continue in โ€œthis new chapterโ€ but that Shipley instead โ€œdecided to step away.โ€

Bezos said that The Post no longer needs to offer a โ€œbroad-based opinion sectionโ€ because of a diversity of opinions available online.

โ€œThere was a time when a newspaper, especially one that was a local monopoly, might have seen it as a service to bring to the readerโ€™s doorstep every morning a broad-based opinion section that sought to cover all views,โ€ Bezos wrote. โ€œToday, the internet does that job.โ€

Post publisher and CEO William Lewis told staffers in an email Wednesday that the change was not about โ€œsiding with any political party.โ€

โ€œThis is about being crystal clear about what we stand for as a newspaper,โ€ Lewis wrote.

“I shared this note with the Washington Post team this morning:

Iโ€™m writing to let you know about a change coming to our opinion pages.

We are going to be writing every day in support and defense of two pillars: personal liberties and free markets. Weโ€™ll cover other topics too of course, but viewpoints opposing those pillars will be left to be published by others.

There was a time when a newspaper, especially one that was a local monopoly, might have seen it as a service to bring to the readerโ€™s doorstep every morning a broad-based opinion section that sought to cover all views. Today, the internet does that job.

I am of America and for America, and proud to be so. Our country did not get here by being typical. And a big part of Americaโ€™s success has been freedom in the economic realm and everywhere else. Freedom is ethical โ€” it minimizes coercion โ€” and practical โ€” it drives creativity, invention, and prosperity.

I offered David Shipley, whom I greatly admire, the opportunity to lead this new chapter. I suggested to him that if the answer wasnโ€™t โ€œhell yes,โ€ then it had to be โ€œno.โ€ After careful consideration, David decided to step away. This is a significant shift, it wonโ€™t be easy, and it will require 100% commitment โ€” I respect his decision. Weโ€™ll be searching for a new Opinion Editor to own this new direction.

Iโ€™m confident that free markets and personal liberties are right for America. I also believe these viewpoints are underserved in the current market of ideas and news opinion. Iโ€™m excited for us together to fill that void.

Jeff”
