In addition to Mexico and Canada, Trump increased China tariffs to 20 percent over its role in the fentanyl crisis.

WASHINGTONโ€”President Donald Trump will meet with Mexico and Canada amid U.S. tariffs on those countries, according to Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.

The United States has imposed 25 percent tariffs on its northern and southern neighbors in response to the flow of illegal immigrants and fentanyl into the United States. The United States also slapped a 10 percent tariff on Canadaโ€™s energy sector.

In an interview with Fox Business on March 4, Lutnick said he has been in touch with Mexico and Canada and that they committed to doing โ€œbetter.โ€

He said that President Donald Trump will โ€œwork something outโ€ with Canada and Mexico.

โ€œItโ€™s not going to be a pause, none of that pause stuff, but I think heโ€™s going to figure out, โ€˜You do more, and Iโ€™ll meet you in the middle some way,’โ€ said Lutnick.

โ€œAnd weโ€™re going to probably be announcing that tomorrow,โ€ he continued. โ€œSo somewhere in the middle will likely be the outcome, the president moving with the Canadians and Mexicans, but not all the way.โ€

Canada responded to the tariffs by imposing 25 percent tariffs on the United States that took effect on March 4.

โ€œLet me be unequivocally clear โ€“ there is no justification for these actions,โ€ Trudeau said of the U.S. tariffs on March 4.

Mexico announced it will enact tariffs on the United States beginning March 9.

โ€œItโ€™s inconceivable that they donโ€™t think about the damage this is going to cause to United States citizens and businesses,โ€ said Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. โ€œNo one wins with this decision.โ€

The Canadian response will be two-pronged, taxing $30 billion in U.S. products immediately and $125 billion in 21 days.

โ€œOur tariffs will remain in place until the U.S. trade action is withdrawn, and should U.S. tariffs not cease, we are in active and ongoing discussions with provinces and territories to pursue several non-tariff measures,โ€œ said Trudeau. โ€While we urge the U.S. administration to reconsider their tariffs, Canada remains firm in standing up for our economy, our jobs, our workers, and for a fair deal.โ€

Earlier on March 4, Vice President JD Vance told reporters that Trump will talk with Canada regarding the tariffs.
