Setting expectations in a social media post, Trump indicated Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will have to accept some territorial losses and give up on aspirations to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to settle the current conflict with Russia.
“President Zelenskyy of Ukraine can end the war with Russia almost immediately, if he wants to, or he can continue to fight,” Trump began his Truth Social post on Sunday evening.
Trump has repeatedly raised the prospect of land swaps and territorial cessions as part of a plan to settle the conflict. But Zelenskyy has pushed back on the idea.
“Ukraine’s Constitution makes it impossible to give up or trade land,” Zelenskyy said earlier on Sunday.
Writing his social media post hours later, Trump wrote, “No getting back Obama given Crimea,” referring to the 2014 Russian annexation of the Crimean Peninsula.
“And NO GOING INTO NATO BY UKRAINE,” Trump added. “Some things never change!!!”
