House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) confirmed Sunday that she is visiting Asia but made no mention of Taiwan.

The speaker said she will visit Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, and Japan with a congressional delegation, according to a statement issued early on Sunday, to โ€œhold high-level meetings to discuss how we can further advance our shared interests and values, including peace and security, economic growth and trade, the COVID-19 pandemic, the climate crisis, human rights, and democratic governance.โ€

Her comments did not address a potential stop in Taiwan amid threats issued by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and an apparent mobilization of the regimeโ€™s military in the South China Sea. The CCP has long claimed that Taiwan, which has been self-governed since 1949 and never controlled by the regime, is part of its territory.

โ€œToday, our Congressional delegation travels to the Indoโ€“Pacific to reaffirm Americaโ€™s strong and unshakeable commitment to our allies and friends in the region,โ€ Pelosi said.

Earlier this month, amid reports that Pelosi would visit the island nation, President Joe Biden briefly told reporters that the U.S. military โ€œthinks itโ€™s not a good idea right now.โ€

A Chinese regime propagandist with the state-run Global Times deleted a Twitter post Saturday asserting that Beijing could shoot down Pelosiโ€™s plane if it is escorted by the military to Taiwan.

โ€œIf US fighter jets escort Pelosiโ€™s plane into Taiwan, it is [an] invasion,โ€ Hu Xijin, a columnist for the CCP-controlled Global Times, wrote on the platform. โ€œThe [Peopleโ€™s Liberation Army] has the right to forcibly dispel Pelosiโ€™s plane and the US fighter jets, including firing warning shots and making tactical movement of obstruction.โ€

โ€œIf ineffective, then shoot them down,โ€ he added.

Meanwhile, a comment by a Chinese Peopleโ€™s Liberation Army unit on Weibo, a heavily censored Twitter-like social media site used by mainland Chinese people, wrote to โ€œprepare for war!โ€ The comment on Friday received millions of โ€œlikes.โ€

On Sunday, Pelosiโ€™s plane touched down in Hawaii and she visited Pearl Harbor, the site of the famed Japanese attack that sparked the United Statesโ€™ involvement in World War II, according to the statement.ย ย Her delegation, she said,ย received a briefing from United States Indoโ€“Pacific Command.
