Rep. Gohmert Cites US Code that May Force Capitol Police to Release Remaining Jan. 6 Surveillance Footage

The Epoch Times Header

As the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6 Attack on the United States Capitol continues its effort to prove allegations of insurrection against former President Donald Trump and his supporters, Capitol Police and House Democrats continue to block all efforts to force the release of all surveillance video footage and emails, which could possibly exonerate those being accused of wrongdoing. Now, Rep. Louis Gohmert (R-Texas) is citing a United States Code that could legally force the release of that evidence.

In aย July, 29, 2022 letterย to Capitol Police Board Chair William J. Walker, obtained by The Epoch Times, Gohmertโ€”backed by the signatures of 23 additional GOP lawmakersโ€”demanded the release of footage captured on Capitol Hill security cameras on Jan. 6, 2021,ย currently being withheldย under โ€œsovereign immunity.โ€

โ€œAs you must be aware,โ€ Gohmert wrote, โ€œ2 U.S.C. ยง 1979 states that โ€˜any Member โ€ฆ of either House of Congressโ€™ can โ€˜obtain information from the Capitol Police regarding the operations and activities of the Capitol Police that affect the Senate and House of Representatives.โ€™ Subsection (c) makes clear that nothing in that law may be construed to prevent us, as Members of the House of Representatives from our ability to obtain those videos.โ€

Gohmert concluded that โ€œReleasing this information is absolutely essential to proper governance and truth to protect and perpetuate this self, governing nation.โ€

โ€˜Itโ€™s About Revengeโ€™

As The Epoch Times reported July 5, attorneys of Jan. 6 prisoners and defendants have provided evidence in several cases that indicate the government is manufacturing evidence to arrest and incarcerate people who attended the protest at the Capitol. In the meantime, Gohmert insists the government is also hiding evidence that could be used in the defense of these people.

โ€œThatโ€™s exactly what theyโ€™re doing,โ€ Gohmert reiterated, noting how he himself has been a victim of the Jan. 6 Committeeโ€™s โ€œSoviet-style propaganda.โ€

Reports disclose how Cassidy Hutchinson, former aide to the then-Whitehouse Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, told the Committee during her June deposition that Gohmert asked then-President Donald Trump for a pardon.

Gohmert demanded a release of the full, unedited video and transcript of Hutchinsonโ€™s deposition, saying the way the video was presented erased the fact that he was actually seeking pardons for โ€œvery deserving military members, former military, and one civilian servant.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve been personally affected by the lies created by using tape,โ€ Gohmert told The Epoch Times. โ€œThey had Cassidy Hutchinson saying I requested a pardon without getting the full context. I have never asked for a pardon for myself. Iโ€™ve never done anything that needed a pardon. But I was requesting pardons for a number of people that have been screwed over by the justice system.โ€
