The lone shooter in an incident in midtown Manhattan on July 28 is dead, according to authorities.

The New York Police Department stated at 8:06 p.m. on X that the scene had been contained.

The body of 27 year old Shane Tamura was found with a F4-15 rifle, on the 33rd floor following a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He grew up in Hawaii and currently lived in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he worked as a licensed private investigator. He had a legal permit to carry firearms.

The NFL headquarters was inside the targeted building at the 345 Park Avenue, and may have been the reason for Shane Tamura choosing that building and also a motive for the attack. Tamura was known to have loved playing football and he was a standout running back who graduated from Granada Hill High School in 2016, and who hoped to play professional football. However, officials said that Tamura had claimed to have Chronic traumatic encephalopathy or CTE, a degenerative brain disease linked to repeated head injuries, which he felt was caused from playing football.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams said earlier that the city had an active shooter investigation.

“There is an active shooter investigation taking place in Midtown right now,” he said on social media. The shooting reportedly took place at an office building in Manhattan that houses financial firms and the NFL.

“Please take proper safety precautions if you are in vicinity and do not go outside if you are near Park Avenue and East 51st Street,” Adams said.

At 7:52 p.m., New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the shooter had been neutralized.

“At this time, the scene has been contained and the lone shooter has been neutralized,” Tisch said.

On social media, Adams identified 345 Park Avenue as the location of a search. He also released a video stating that there were multiple injuries and asking people in the building to remain in place as police conducted a floor-by-floor search.

According to FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino, the FBI New York Field Office responded to provide support at the crime scene. He later posted on social media that the NYPD was the lead on the investigation and that the motive was under investigation.

This is a breaking story and will be updated.
