Targeting U.S.

In early 2010, under the Obama Administration, the Internal Revenue Service – one of the most powerful agencies in our government – began targeting conservative groups who were seeking tax-exempt status simply because of their names, viewpoints, and values. Non-profit organizations with “Tea Party,” “Patriots,” or “9/12” in their name were singled out by the IRS for special scrutiny resulting in unsubstantiated delay in the processing of their applications for tax-exemption and unnecessary and intrusive requests for information. This unconstitutional harassment became one of the largest political scandals of our time.

These groups’ constitutional rights were violated and they felt powerless to defend themselves from this bureaucratic intimidation and discrimination – until they reached out to the ACLJ.

By early 2012, dozens of Tea Party and conservative groups targeted and harassed by the Obama IRS began contacting the ACLJ. As the ACLJ began working the cases and pushing back, the corruption was revealed and the IRS quickly found itself in the middle of one of the worst political targeting scandals of the century.

This film, Targeting U.S., shares the personal stories of those conservative groups that were singled out by the IRS and the ACLJ’s unprecedented successful legal fight to protect their clients’ constitutional rights.
