Trump Gives Putin 2 Weeks to Show Good Faith on Ukraine Peace Deal, Warns of New Sanctions

Amid continued Russian attacks against Ukraine, Trump said heโ€™s giving Putin two weeks to prove heโ€™s serious about peaceโ€”or face tougher action.

President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he is giving Russian President Vladimir Putin two weeks to demonstrate a genuine commitment to ending the war in Ukraine, warning that failure to do so could result in tougher action, including sanctions.

โ€œIโ€™m very disappointed,โ€ Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on May 28, referring to Russiaโ€™s latest drone and missile strikes on Ukrainian cities, which he condemned for killing civilians during ongoing talks to put an end to the long-running war.

Asked by a reporter whether he still believes Putin โ€œactually wants to end the war,โ€ Trump said he remains uncertain whether the Russian leader is negotiating in good faithโ€”and pledged a tougher U.S. response if it turns out Putin is insincere.

โ€œI canโ€™t tell you that but Iโ€˜ll let you know in about two weeks,โ€ Trump replied. โ€œWithin two weeks weโ€™re going to find outโ€”very soon. Weโ€™re going to find out whether or not heโ€™s tapping us along or not. And if he is, weโ€™ll respond a little bit differently.โ€

Trump said his special envoy, Steve Witkoff, is leading negotiations with the Kremlin โ€œvery stronglyโ€ and suggested that Russia appears interested in reaching an agreement. They seem โ€œto want to do something, but until the document is signed, I canโ€™t tell you, nobody can.โ€

Despite his growing frustration over Russiaโ€™s escalating attacks against Ukraine in the midst of U.S.-brokered negotiations, Trump told reporters that he has held off on imposing new sanctions on Moscow because he believes the warring sides are close to a cease-fire. โ€œI donโ€™t want to screw it up,โ€ he said, noting that sanctions could derail the talks.

Trump said heโ€™s been โ€œa lot tougherโ€ on Russia than other U.S. presidents, โ€œbut you have to know when to useโ€ sanctions most effectively.

โ€œIf I think itโ€™s going to hurt a deal … this isnโ€™t my warโ€”this is Bidenโ€™s war, Zelenskyyโ€™s war, and Putinโ€™s war, this isnโ€™t Trumpโ€™s war,โ€ he said, adding that the only reason heโ€™s involved is to end the bloodshed.
