Trump Says Heads of Major Countries to Join Gaza Board of Peace

The BoP will guide the formation of a Palestinian-international expert government and later hand Gaza to a reformed Palestinian Authority.

Heads of major countries will be on the Board of Peace (BoP) to oversee the establishment of an interim technocratic government in Gaza, U.S. President Donald Trump said on Nov. 18.

Under the second phase of the U.S.-brokered cease-fire agreement between Israel and the terrorist group Hamas, the security responsibilities in Gaza are to be transferred to a new International Stabilization Force (ISF), with an initial two-year mandate.

The yet-to-be-filled BoP would oversee the creation of a government comprising Palestinian and international experts, and eventually hand authority over Gaza to a reformed Palestinian Authority, creating what the document describes as โ€œa credible pathway to Palestinian self-determination and statehood.โ€

The BoP will also coordinate security, humanitarian, and reconstruction planning.

โ€œEverybody wants to be on the board, and itโ€™ll end up being quite a large board because itโ€™ll be the heads of every major country,โ€ Trump, who will chair the BoP, said during a dinner he hosted for Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Tuesday.

Addressing the crown prince, Trump said he hoped the prince would agree to serve on the board.

โ€œYouโ€™ll accept, I hope,โ€ Trump said.

Saudi Arabia had voiced support for a U.S.-drafted U.N. Security Council resolution endorsing Trumpโ€™s Gaza cease-fire plan.

The resolution was adopted on Monday and was described by U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Mike Waltz as โ€œanother significant step towards a stable Gazaโ€ and an โ€œenvironment that will allow Israel to live in security.โ€

Russia and Chinaโ€”both permanent members of the U.N. Security Council with veto powerโ€”ultimately abstained, easing earlier concerns that either might block the resolution.

โ€œChina, which was against it, took a pass and didnโ€™t vote against it, and Russia, which was against it, didnโ€™t vote against it,โ€ Trump said during his speech on Nov. 18. โ€œWe appreciate it, because one negative vote and it doesnโ€™t happen.โ€

He added that the approval of the resolution was a โ€œgreat honorโ€ for him and said the BoP, with the mandate to manage Gaza until the end of 2027, will do โ€œsome fantastic things.โ€

โ€œBut the board of peace will be something thatโ€™s never even been thought of before. And itโ€™s covering Gaza, but it’ll end up covering large portions of the world,โ€ Trump said.

Addressing the crown prince, Trump said that both he and the prince are โ€œdeeply committed to an enduring cease-fireโ€ that will grow into a โ€œlasting peace.โ€
