Mike Pompeo Announces Decision on 2024 Run

Mike Pompeo, former U.S. Secretary of State under the Trump administration, announced on Friday that he will not run for president in 2024.

Pompeo, in an interview with Fox News, announced his decision late afternoon today.

โ€œI have made a decision: I was on your show a number of months back, and you asked what I was gonna to do in 2024. Susan and I now have been thinking about it and, prayerfully, have come to the conclusion that weโ€™re not going to join the race in 2024,โ€ Pompeo told host Bret Baier, referring to his wife.

โ€œWhile we care deeply about America and the issues that Iโ€™ve been talking about this last year and a halfโ€”and frankly for decadesโ€”matter an awful lot, this isnโ€™t our moment. This isnโ€™t the time for us to seek elected office,โ€ the former official added.

When asked whether considerations about former President Donald Trumpโ€™s surging poll numbers impacted his decision, Pompeo answered in the negative, adding that it is a โ€œdeeply personal decisionโ€ based on family considerations.

โ€œAnd frankly, this race, I hope it isnโ€™t about people. I hope itโ€™s about these ideas,โ€ he added. โ€œThese are things, since I was a young soldier, that Iโ€™ve been working on: the fact that weโ€™re losing our military edge, the fact that we are on pace to spend two trillion dollars more than we take in โ€ฆ these are things that I care about.โ€

In June 2021, the former CIA director launched the Champion American Values Political Action Committee to โ€œprotect American values and to help Republicans take back majorities in both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate as well as governorships and control of state legislatures all across America.โ€

When asked if he would endorse anyone in the primary, Pompeo answered: โ€œWeโ€™ll see how it plays out.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not about any one person,โ€ he said.

Later in the interview, Pompeo weighed in on the abortion debate.
