Pakistan Nominates Trump for Nobel Peace Prize

The nomination, made on Saturday, said U.S. President Donald Trump had โ€˜demonstrated great strategic foresight and stellar statesmanship.โ€™

Pakistan has nominated U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, calling him a โ€œgenuine peacemakerโ€ for his role in helping to avert a major confrontation between India and Pakistan last month.

Pakistanโ€™s government said in a statement posted on June 21 on social media platform X that Trump had demonstrated โ€œstellar statesmanshipโ€ during the Indiaโ€“Pakistan crisis. It was triggered by the terrorist massacre of 26 Indian tourists near Pahalgam in India-controlled Kashmir on April 22.

At the time, India accused Pakistan of supporting the terrorists, but the two countries, both nuclear-armed, agreed to the terms of a U.S.-mediated cease-fire on May 10, following three days of cross-border shelling, drone attacks, and missile strikes

The Pakistani governmentโ€™s statement said Trump showed โ€œdecisive diplomatic intervention and pivotal leadership during the recent Indiaโ€“Pakistan crisis.โ€

โ€œAt a moment of heightened regional turbulence, President Trump demonstrated great strategic foresight and stellar statesmanship through robust diplomatic engagement with both Islamabad and New Delhi which de-escalated a rapidly deteriorating situation, ultimately securing a ceasefire and averting a broader conflict between the two nuclear states that would have had catastrophic consequences for millions of people in the region and beyond,โ€ it stated.

On May 12, Trump told reporters that he had threatened to revoke all U.S. trade with both India and Pakistan unless they agreed to stop the fighting.

โ€œI said, โ€˜Come on, weโ€™re going to do a lot of trade with you guys. If you stop it, weโ€™re doing trade. If you donโ€™t stop it, weโ€™re not going to do any trade,’โ€ Trump said.

โ€œWe stopped the nuclear conflict. … It could have been a bad nuclear war. Millions of people could have been killed.โ€

The nominations for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prizeโ€”to be awarded in Octoberโ€”closed in January, so Pakistanโ€™s citation would be for next yearโ€™s prize.

On June 20, Trump posted on social media platform Truth Social that he had arranged a โ€œwonderful treatyโ€ between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Trump said, โ€œI wonโ€™t get a Nobel Peace Prize no matter what I do, including Russia/Ukraine, and Israel/Iran, whatever those outcomes may be, but the people know, and thatโ€™s all that matters to me!โ€
