If I could travel back in time to 1776, I’d definitely choose to be there when the Declaration of Independence was signed and announced as official to the people. If it’s true that the Liberty Bell was rung to announce the colonies were free, then this is was I’d be thinking and feeling that day.
RING THAT BELL
Ring that great bell
Please can’t you say
And why won’t you tell
If freedom’s come today?
Ring, we beg you, ring it
Let us hear its firm peal
Confirm the fire of liberty’s lit
Our fate stamp and seal.
Get the bell swinging
If our people are one
If we are now fighting
As a united, free nation.
Set that bell a-singing
So we can all hear
If the soil we’re planting
Is our own without fear.
Ring the bell now
Mr. Belfry, we’re waiting
Our hearts are aglow,
Our necks are straining.
Look—it’s now moving
Hush, perhaps it’s the wind
Maybe the breeze is lying
Alas, nature, be kind.
See how it swings
The way it so shines
Listen as it dings
Hear those bold chimes!
Direct thanks to our Maker
Toward Him it’s all due
They’ve signed the paper
And rung the bell, ‘tis true!
Ring that dear bell!
We beg, never stop
For now tyrants we’ll fell
And our blood gladly drop.
