โIt sure doesnโt feel worse than when I grew up in Jim Crow Alabama. OK?โ Ms. Rice fired back. โSo letโs drop this notion that weโre worse race relations today than we were in the past. Really? That means weโve made no progress. Really?
โI think the hyperbole about how much worse it is isnโt doing us any good,โ she continued. โThis countryโs never going to be colorblind. We had the initial original sin of slavery. Itโs still with us.โ
Ms. Jones said that some people argue, โItโs top-down, it starts with the presidentโ and โthe words that he speaks.โ
โOh, come on, all right?โ Ms. Rice responded. โI would be the first to say we need to watch our language about race. We need to watch that we donโt use dog whistles to people, but when we start saying, โOh, you know, itโs worse today,โ no, theyโre not.โ
Ms. Rice, who served as secretary of state under former President George W. Bush, now teaches global business at Stanford University.
