Arizona House Speaker Rusty Bowers has lost his Republican primary bid for a state Senate seat to a candidate backed by former President Donald Trump, just weeks after Bowers testified to the House Jan. 6 committee.

State Sen. David Farnsworth, who was endorsed by Trump in June, was projected by The Associated Press and other news outlets to win the GOP primary against Bowers. As of the morning of Aug. 3, Farnsworth held a more than 20-point lead over Bowers.

After providing testimony to the Jan. 6 committee, Bowers acknowledged to NBC News in July that it would be difficult to win reelection.

โ€œIf I pull this off, itโ€™s going to be a miracle,โ€ he said at the time of the primary.

Bowers has been censured by the Arizona Republican Party for demonstrating โ€œhe is unfit to serve the platform of the Republican Party of Arizonaโ€ and going against โ€œthe will of the voter of the Republican Party in Arizona.โ€ The state GOP called on voters to โ€œexpel him permanently from officeโ€ during the contest.

โ€œIโ€™m well aware that Iโ€™m highly distrusted,โ€ Bowers also told The Associated Press before the primary. โ€œMy district is a very Trump district, and who knows how this is all going to work out?โ€

โ€œAnd if it doesnโ€™t work out, great, Iโ€™d do it all again the same way.โ€

Criticism

Trump criticized Bowers a day before the primary and called on voters to oust him.

โ€œRemember Arizona, your so-called โ€˜Speaker,โ€™ Rusty (an appropriate name because he is Rusty, just like steel gets rusty and weak) Bowers, is absolutely terrible,โ€ he wrote on Truth Social.

In testimony in June before the House committee, Bowers claimed that Trumpโ€™s lawyer Rudy Giuliani had no evidence of election fraud after the November 2020 election.

โ€œMy recollection, he said, โ€˜Weโ€™ve got lots of theories, we just donโ€™t have the evidence,โ€™โ€ Bowers said.ย โ€œAnd I donโ€™t know if that was a gaffe or maybe he didnโ€™t think through what he said, but both myself and others in my group โ€ฆ both remember that specifically, and afterward, we kind of laughed about it.โ€
