California officials and family members are mourning the death of the Hollywood actor and director and his wife.

Hollywood actor and director Rob Reiner and his wife were confirmed dead after an apparent double homicide at their home in Los Angeles on Dec. 14.

“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time,” the family said in a statement provided to media outlets.

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) said in a statement that two people were found dead at Reiner’s home in the Brentwood neighborhood and that homicide detectives are involved in the investigation.

The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) told The Epoch Times that they responded at 3:38 p.m. to a medical emergency at the 200 block of Chadbourne Avenue. Responders found the bodies of a 78-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman inside the home.

Authorities have not officially released their identities, and it remains unclear how they died.

“At this time, no further details are available as this is an ongoing [Robbery-Homicide Division] investigation into an apparent homicide,” the LAPD stated, referring questions to the division.

Gov. Gavin Newsom confirmed in a Dec. 14 statement that Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner had died.

“Jen and I are heartbroken by the tragic loss of Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner,” Newsom stated. “Rob will be remembered for his remarkable filmography and for his extraordinary contribution to humanity.”

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass stated on X that she was heartbroken over the deaths of the couple and said the investigation into their deaths is ongoing.

“This is a devastating loss for our city and our country. Rob Reiner’s contributions reverberate throughout American culture and society, and he has improved countless lives through his creative work and advocacy fighting for social and economic justice,” Bass stated. “I’m holding all who loved Rob and Michele in my heart.”

Bass said she has “tremendous respect” for Reiner, describing him as an acclaimed actor, director, producer, writer, and political activist.

“Among his numerous contributions, Rob helped create First 5 California, a landmark initiative funded by a tobacco tax to support early childhood development programs,” she stated. “He and Michele fought for early childhood development and marriage equality, working to overturn Proposition 8.”
