Indiana House Passes New Congressional Map Favoring Republicans

The state House passed the bill by a vote of 57–41. It will now go to the Indiana Senate, where it’s uncertain if the bill will pass.

The Indiana House of Representatives on Dec. 5 passed a bill that would revise the state’s maps for congressional representation, which have been demanded by President Donald Trump to ensure Republicans can win more seats in the U.S. House of Representatives during the 2026 general elections.

The maps would make changes to the only two U.S. House districts in the state that are represented by Democrats—the First District of Rep. Frank Mrvan, and the Seventh District of Rep. André Carson—by adding several Republican-leaning areas to them. It would hurt their chances of reelection or, if they chose to retire, the Democratic Party’s chances of retaining those seats.

The vote in the Indiana House of Representatives on the bill, H.B. 1032, was 57–41. The law will now go to the Indiana Senate, which also has a Republican majority, though questions have been raised about whether there is enough Republican support for the bill to be passed.

“The Senate intends to reconvene as part of the regular 2026 session on Dec. 8 and make a final decision that week on any redistricting proposal sent from the House,” Republican Indiana Senate President pro tempore Roderick Bray wrote on Nov. 25.

The action is part of a series of partisan redistricting efforts in states, undertaken by both Democrats and Republicans, to cement structural advantages for the 2026 election.

This is a breaking story and will be updated.
