Mike Pompeo, former U.S. Secretary of State under the Trump administration, announced on Friday that he will not run for president in 2024.
Pompeo, in an interview with Fox News, announced his decision late afternoon today.
โI have made a decision: I was on your show a number of months back, and you asked what I was gonna to do in 2024. Susan and I now have been thinking about it and, prayerfully, have come to the conclusion that weโre not going to join the race in 2024,โ Pompeo told host Bret Baier, referring to his wife.
โWhile we care deeply about America and the issues that Iโve been talking about this last year and a halfโand frankly for decadesโmatter an awful lot, this isnโt our moment. This isnโt the time for us to seek elected office,โ the former official added.
When asked whether considerations about former President Donald Trumpโs surging poll numbers impacted his decision, Pompeo answered in the negative, adding that it is a โdeeply personal decisionโ based on family considerations.
โAnd frankly, this race, I hope it isnโt about people. I hope itโs about these ideas,โ he added. โThese are things, since I was a young soldier, that Iโve been working on: the fact that weโre losing our military edge, the fact that we are on pace to spend two trillion dollars more than we take in โฆ these are things that I care about.โ
In June 2021, the former CIA director launched the Champion American Values Political Action Committee to โprotect American values and to help Republicans take back majorities in both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate as well as governorships and control of state legislatures all across America.โ
When asked if he would endorse anyone in the primary, Pompeo answered: โWeโll see how it plays out.โ
โItโs not about any one person,โ he said.
Later in the interview, Pompeo weighed in on the abortion debate.
