More than 200 people have been killed after a London-bound Air India plane with 242 people on board crashed near the airport in Indiaโs western city of Ahmedabad on Thursday, authorities say.
The crash marked the worldโs worst aviation disaster in a decade.
Air India flight AI 171, a Boeing 787, crashed into a residential area five minutes after taking off at 1:38 p.m. local time, said Faiz Ahmed Kidwai, director general of the directorate of civil aviation.

โThirty seconds after take-off, there was a loud noise and then the plane crashed,โ the survivor, Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, 40, told a local media outlet from his hospital bed. โIt all happened so quickly.โ
Ramesh said he sustained impact injuries on his chest, eyes, and feet.
โWhen I got up, there were bodies all around me. I was scared. I stood up and ran. There were pieces of the plane all around me,โ he said.
โSomeone grabbed hold of me and put me in an ambulance and brought me to the hospital.โ
