Video Playlist: Free the People: Speaking Freely

5Mind. The Meme Platform

Libertarians who are using technology, video storytelling, and social media, Free the People reaches new audiences upstream of politics. They are building a constituency for the values of entrepreneurship, choice, peaceful cooperation, and your right to pursue happiness however you see fit, as long as you don’t hurt people or take their stuff.

Video 1: Race and Justice in America

In our hyper-polarized world, do we really even hear what “the other side” is trying to say? Are we trying? This conversation with Rev. Dr. F. Willis Johnson about race and justice in America seems especially timely. Working as a minister in Ferguson, MO, he witnessed the tragedy unfold after the shooting of Michael Brown. Matt Kibbe joins him to discuss racism, criminal justice, and how we might come together to decentralize power and bring it back to the people.

Video 2: Patrick Byrne on Why the Blockchain Matters

Patrick Byrne, CEO of Overstock, explains the blockchain and why it is so much more than just bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. For 6,000 years humans have been engaging in consensual exchange. The blockchain changes all that by removing middlemen and third-party institutions that so often become corrupted over time.

Video 3: Patrick Byrne on Hope for the Future

Patrick Byrne, CEO of Overstock, explains why he remains optimistic about the future of liberty. According to Milton Friedman, “we have something on our side, and that is people are always yearning for freedom.”

Video 5: Patrick Byrne on Cannabis Legalization

Video 6: Sen. Mike Lee on the Role of a Supreme Court Justice

It’s not about “Left” vs. “Right,” it’s about enforcing the law without being influenced by political outcomes. Matt Kibbe interviews Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) on the proper role of a Supreme Court justice.

Video 7: What All Mass Shooters Have in Common

The one most common denominator of ISIS recruits and mass shooters is no father involvement. Dr. Warren Farrell, PhD and Matt Kibbe discuss the psychological and fiscal savings we would create if society focused less on blaming “guns” and more on getting fathers involved with their children.

Video 8: The Importance of Fathers with Dr. Warren Farrell

The degree to which boys get involved with ISIS and mass shootings are directly connected to a lack of fathers. The feminist movement does not understand the value of the family or the value of fathers. Dr. Warren Farrell, PhD and Matt Kibbe discuss why families matter and the importance of checks and balances between the father and mother.

Video 9: ACLU President on Government Surveillance

Susan Herman, President of the ACLU, and Matt Kibbe discuss the Fourth Amendment. “The problem with government surveillance is that it reverses the conditions for democracy. It enables the government to know everything about what we’re doing, and prevents us from knowing what they’re doing. Either of those results by itself would be a problem, but together they prevent any remedy.”

Video 10: ACLU President on Neo-Nazis and Freedom of Speech

Susan Herman, President of the ACLU, and Matt Kibbe discuss defending the First Amendment rights of everyone, even those we disagree with. “You cannot allow the government to be the censor of what people can and can’t say. We have to be the watchmen for our own truth.”

Video 11: ACLU President Speaks Out on Campus Craziness

Susan Herman, President of the ACLU, and Matt Kibbe discuss the craziness on college campuses. In a recent poll, 2/3 of incoming college freshman said, “I shouldn’t have to listen to ideas that are detestable.”

Video 12: Do Libertarians care about the poor?

Deirdre McCloskey started out as a socialist because she wanted to help the poor. She soon realized that libertarian policies—free markets and capitalism—actually help the poor far more than socialist ones ever could.

Video 13: Reason Magazine Editor-in-Chief Speaks Out

Katherine Mangu-Ward, Editor-in-Chief at Reason Magazine, talks with Matt Kibbe about what it means to be a libertarian in today’s polarized political climate. How do we help people get out of their bubbles to see a different way of thinking about society and politics?

About Free the People

Free the People’s goal is to get ahead of politics, and engage in the cultural exchange that will set the political agenda for the next 50 years. We want to set the conversation, instead of settling for rhetorical scraps tossed to us by the political class. We want to make the community for liberty a cool thing. Using cutting-edge technology and storytelling, we’re building a grassroots constituency that can translate good ideas into education, conversation, and social activism. This community influences culture and public opinion, and drives boots-on-the-ground social change from the bottom up.

We defend free speech online, the right to bear arms, and privacy from government cyber-snooping, all with equal passion. We fight government cronyism and go after big businesses that game the system at the expense of consumers and competitors. Our shared values, like equal treatment under the law and innocent until proven guilty, animate fights for justice reform, and against federal mandatory minimum sentences and civil asset forfeiture. Most importantly, we defend free choice in everything from drug policy, to healthcare and retirement, to every aspect of the sharing economy.

Good ideas and social organization can best the most vested of special interests and the most powerful governments. If you want to disrupt the status quo, look in the mirror. You are the change.
