White House Not Seeking Regime Change in Russia: Blinken

The Epoch Times Header

Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Sunday that the United States doesnโ€™t have any plans for a regime change in Russia, following comments from President Joe Biden that Russian President Vladimir Putin cannot stay in power amid the conflict in Ukraine.

โ€œI think the president, the White House, made the point last night that, quite simply, President Putin cannot be empowered to wage war or engage in aggression against Ukraine or anyone else,โ€ Blinken told reporters while in Israel.

โ€œAs you know, and as you have heard us say repeatedly, we do not have a strategy of regime change in Russiaโ€”or anywhere else, for that matter,โ€ Blinken added. โ€œIn this case, as in any case, itโ€™s up to the people of the country in question. Itโ€™s up to the Russian people.โ€

In a speech in Poland, Biden declared that โ€œfor Godโ€™s sake, this man cannot remain in power,โ€ referring to Putin. The comment drew speculation that the White House was pushing for a regime change to potentially topple Putinโ€™s government.

Bidenโ€™s remark was quickly dismissed by the Kremlin, with top spokesman Dmitry Peskov telling Reuters that itโ€™s โ€œnot for Biden to decideโ€ while asserting that โ€œpresident of Russia is elected by Russians.โ€

โ€œWe have a strategy to put unprecedented pressure on Russia, and weโ€™re carrying that forward,โ€ Blinken also told reporters. โ€œAnd we have a strategy to make sure that weโ€™re providing all of the humanitarian support that we can, and we have a strategy to reinforce NATO.โ€

Other than Blinken, White House officials and Western leaders like French President Emmanuel Macron distanced themselves from Bidenโ€™s remarks.

Macron on Sunday warned against verbal escalation with Moscow, saying: โ€œI would not use those words.โ€

The French president on Friday had said he was seeking to hold more talks with Putin in the coming days regarding the situation in Ukraine as well as an initiative to help people leave the besieged city of Mariupol.

Putin sent his troops into Ukraine on Feb. 24 for what he calls a โ€œspecial military operationโ€ to demilitarize Ukraine. Ukraine and the West say Russia has launched an unprovoked war of aggression.
