The Operator: Firing the Shots that Killed Osama bin Laden and My Years as a SEAL Team Warrior

This instant New York Times bestsellerโ€”โ€œa jaw-dropping, fast-paced accountโ€ (New York Post) recounts SEAL Team Operator Robert Oโ€™Neillโ€™s incredible four-hundred-mission career, including the attempts to rescue โ€œLone Survivorโ€ Marcus Luttrell and abducted-by-Somali-pirates Captain Richard Phillips, and which culminated in the death of the worldโ€™s most wanted terroristโ€”Osama bin Laden.

In The Operator, Robert Oโ€™Neill describes his idyllic childhood in Butte, Montana; his impulsive decision to join the SEALs; the arduous evaluation and training process; and the even tougher gauntlet he had to run to join the SEALsโ€™ most elite unit. After officially becoming a SEAL, Oโ€™Neill would spend more than a decade in the most intense counterterror effort in US history. For extended periods, not a night passed without him and his small team recording multiple enemy killsโ€”and though he was lucky enough to survive, several of the SEALs heโ€™d trained with and fought beside never made it home.

โ€œImpossible to put downโ€ฆThe Operator is unique, surprising, a kind of counternarrative, and certainly the other half of the story of one of the worldโ€™s most famous military operationsโ€ฆIn the larger sense, this book is aboutโ€ฆhow to be human while in the very same moment dealing with death, destruction, combatโ€ (Doug Stanton, New York Times bestselling author). Oโ€™Neill describes the nonstop action of his deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan, evokes the black humor of years-long combat, brings to vivid life the lethal efficiency of the militaryโ€™s most selective units, and reveals details of the most celebrated terrorist takedown in history. This is โ€œa riveting, unvarnished, and wholly unforgettable portrait of Americaโ€™s most storied commandos at warโ€ (Joby Warrick).

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Harrowing . . . In frank and vivid detail and blunt and plain language, Mr. O’Neill describes some of the 400 counterterrorism operations and close quarter combat he experienced in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere through his career as a SEAL . . . An interesting and insightful book about some of the most historic moments in modern American military history.”

โ€œA jaw-dropping, fast-paced account.โ€
โ€”New York Post

“Leaves a lump in the reader’s throat . . . The Operator is really a book about life.”
โ€”Montana Standard

“Along the way, the reader learns much about the elite force the nation relies on to undertake often-dangerous covert missions . . . O’Neill, the author, exhibits skills in blending humor with pathos [as he describes] the intricacies of becoming a SEAL and relating the toll a SEAL’s life takes on his family.”
โ€”Buffalo News

“O’Neill absorbingly relates the 2011 attack on bin Laden’s Pakistan compound . . . [Other] fascinating stories include his role in the successful 2009 mission to free Capt. Richard Phillips from Somali pirates, and those of too many fellow SEALs who were killed in battle. Fans of battlefield narratives, such as Michael Golembesky’s Level Zero Heroes, will relish this gripping perspective on 21st-century warfare.”
