Video 1 – WATCH: Abuse of power charge is too โ€˜malleable,โ€™ Patrick Philbin argues | Trump impeachment trial

On the final day of opening defense arguments in the impeachment trial, President Donald Trumpโ€™s legal team argued that the Democratsโ€™ definition of โ€œabuse of powerโ€ is too vague to be considered an impeachable offense. Deputy White House counsel Patrick Philbin said on Jan. 28, 2020 that the Democrats are not using a standard that the Constitutionโ€™s framers would have recognized. He argued they are instead relying on a definition that is โ€œinfinitely malleable.โ€

Video 2 – WATCH: Democratsโ€™ impeachment case has โ€˜inherent flaw,โ€™ Patrick Philbin argues

On the final day of opening defense arguments in the impeachment trial, Deputy White House counsel Patrick Philbin said there is an โ€œinherent flawโ€ in the articles of impeachment against Trump if senators do not think a president must commit a crime to be impeached. The abuse of power charge โ€œis so malleable based on purely subjective standards that it does not provide any cognizable notice of an offense,โ€ Philbin said on Jan. 28, 2020. Philbin also argued that other parts of Democratsโ€™ arguments, including accusations that Trump tried to cover up the contents of his July call with Ukraineโ€™s president, rely too much on speculation about the presidentโ€™s motives.

Video 3 – WATCH: Impeachment isnโ€™t โ€˜a game of leaks,โ€™ Jay Sekulow argues | Trump impeachment trial

Impeachment โ€œis not a game of leaks and unsourced manuscripts,โ€ President Donald Trumpโ€™s lawyer Jay Sekulow said during the final day of the defenseโ€™s opening arguments in the Senate impeachment trial. Sekulowโ€™s comments referred to a New York Times report this week that former national security adviser John Boltonโ€™s upcoming book indicates Trump told him he wanted to withhold U.S. aid to Ukraine until that nation agreed to announce an investigation into Trumpโ€™s political rival. The New York Times report was based on multiple anonymous sources who described the contents of Boltonโ€™s unpublished manuscript that was sent to the White House as part of a standard review process. Sekulow argued on Jan. 28 that the impeachment trial should be โ€œabove that frayโ€ of leaks and politics and warned that if senators allowed that kind of information to change the trial, it would change the constitutional framework for โ€œgenerations.โ€

Video 5 – WATCH: Jay Sekulow says he thinks Bolton manuscript should be โ€˜inadmissibleโ€™

Jay Sekulow, a member of President Donald Trumpโ€™s legal team, addressed newly reported claims by former national security adviser John Bolton head on during the final day of opening arguments in the impeachment trial. The New York Times reported this week that Boltonโ€™s upcoming book indicates Trump told him he wanted to withhold U.S. aid to Ukraine until that nation agreed to announce an investigation into Trumpโ€™s political rivals. Sekulow said he thought Bolton’s manuscript is โ€œinadmissibleโ€ evidence.

Video 6 – WATCH: In closing defense, Pat Cipollone urges Senate to ‘put the Constitution above partisanship’

White House counsel Pat Cipollone on Jan. 28 urged the Senate to โ€œput the Constitution above partisanshipโ€ in voting on whether to convict President Donald Trump and remove him from office. Cipollone reminded senators that the presidential election is coming up in November, and argued that interfering with that process โ€œwould cause serious and lasting damage.โ€ Cippolone asked, โ€œWhy not American people with this decision?โ€
