CA State Legislator Kevin Kiley Update on Newsom and the Recall

The Legislature Must Investigate Newsom

Today, I called for a formal investigation into Gavin Newsomโ€™s use of โ€œemergency powersโ€ to award massive no-bid contracts to his top campaign donors. You can read my full release here.

This follows a Capital Public Radio report finding โ€œan overlap of at least a half-dozen companies that made substantial contributions to Newsom and received no-bid contracts from the state, influential appointments, or other opportunities related to the stateโ€™s pandemic.โ€ For example:

  • Blue Shield: gave $342,000 to Newsom campaign accounts before, during, and after receiving the most spots on Newsomโ€™s testing โ€œtask forceโ€ and getting a $15 million no-bid contract for vaccine distribution.
  • UnitedHealth: Gave $210,400 to Newsom campaign accounts before, during, and after one subsidiary got a $177 million no-bid contract and other subsidiaries received at least $315 million in contracts through expedited bidding.
  • Bloom Energy: Received a $2 million no-bid ventilator contract before and after giving $85,000 to Newsom campaign accounts
  • BYD China: Its President gave $40,000 to Newsom before receiving a $1.3 billion no-bid mask deal.

Bob Stern, a Democrat and former general counsel to the California Fair Political Practices Commission said: โ€œI really think that the governor has a tin ear in terms of receiving huge campaign contributions and providing sole-source contracts for corporations that were giving him these contributions.โ€

Dan Schnur, a professor of political communications at UC Berkeley said โ€œthe governor and his team needed to make more of an effort to explain to the people of California why these decisions didnโ€™t violate the public trust, and why his donors were given these opportunities.โ€

This is all of course on top of Newsom keeping schools closed because his largest campaign benefactor insists on it. Our State Capitol is corrupt, and no one has ever embodied that corruption like Gavin Newsom.

The Newsom Recall

Last night it became official: 1.5 million signatures.

The Newsom Recall is the greatest citizensโ€™ movement in California history, bringing together people of all party affiliations and all walks of life. Thatโ€™s what has the political class and Special Interests who benefit from Gavin Newsomโ€™s corruption so maniacally worried.

They will do anything and everything to fend it off. For example, on Tuesday the State Assembly is set to vote on SB 29, which would mail every voter an absentee ballot specifically for the Recall.

I will do what I can to stop further chicanery at the Capitol. At the same time, with the signature deadline a month away, itโ€™s vital that we keep our foot on the accelerator. Getting close to 2 million signatures will provide a comfortable enough buffer.

Itโ€™s being said the Recall will be the biggest political event in the United States this year. It is certainly a make-or-break moment for Californiaโ€™s future. It is millions of people saying with one voice enough is enough, taking matters into our own hands, refusing to accept the inevitability of decline and failure.
